OPTOMAP RETINAL EXAMS – THE NEW STANDARD IN EYE CARE

The optomap is a digital image of the retina produced by Optos scanning laser technology. It was invented by Douglas Anderson, whose son permanently lost vision in one eye when a retinal detachment was missed during an eye exam. At MVO we have been using this technology for over 15 years and were the first practice in Alberta to introduce the 3rd-generation optomap scanner to our patients in both our locations.

The optomap is the only technology that can capture more than 80% of your retina in a single image. Traditional imaging methods only show about 15%. This enhanced image allows your MVO optometrist to diagnose eye disease at the earliest possible stage.

Benefits of an optomap retinal scan

Quick, safe, and painless

A split-second is all it takes to capture a high-definition image of the inside of your eye. It’s as simple as positioning in front of the device and opening your eyes wide. There have been no adverse health effects reported in over 150 million imaging sessions.

May not have to dilate your pupils as frequently

Often, a good quality optomap image means your eye doctor will not have to dilate your pupils. While it does not always take the place of dilating the pupils, it may help reduce the frequency of pupil dilation during your annual eye exams.

Results are saved and compared over time

There is a massive amount of information about the health of your eyes and body on the surface of your retinas. Subtle changes over time become visible to your eye doctor when several visits are compared.

Who should receive an optomap retinal scan?

Our optometrists take an optomap retinal scan once each year for adults during their comprehensive eye exams. Children should receive a scan once every two years. Patients who have been diagnosed with an eye disease, or are at risk, may need to be scanned more frequently.

What conditions can be diagnosed with an optomap retinal scan?

The earliest signs of diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and some types of cancers can often be seen within your retina. It may be many years before these diseases cause any problems or symptoms with your vision. If you have been diagnosed with any of these conditions, an annual optomap retinal exam is important to ensure your eyes remain healthy. Eye diseases like retinal holes, tears, or detachments, macular degeneration, and glaucoma are also diagnosed more easily with an optomap retinal scan.

Book your eye exam to ensure you benefit from all the latest technology at MVO to keep your eyes healthy and your vision sharp and clear.
