Acetate Eyewear – not the same as “Plastic Frames”

January 17, 2025

Acetate eyewear has become a favorite among eyewear enthusiasts and fashion-forward individuals alike. Known for its luxurious look, comfort, and sustainability, acetate is a much higher-quality material compared to plastic . Whether you're looking for prescription glasses or fashionable sunglasses, acetate eyewear offers the perfect combination of style, function, and eco-friendliness.

What is Acetate?

Acetate is a plant-based material made from cotton fibers and wood pulp. Known for its strength, lightweight mass, and flexibility, acetate can be molded into an infinite number of unique shapes, making it one of the most popular choices for modern eyewear. Acetate frames are adjustable, durable, and completely customizable in terms of colours and patterns.

At Mountain View Optometry, we’re proud to offer a wide selection of high-quality acetate eyewear that combines form, function, and sustainability. Our collection features top-tier acetate frames from stylish brands like Moscot, Bevel, Tom Davies, Orgreen, Res/Rei, Etnia, and others.

Mazzucchelli Acetate: Cotton, Powders & Rollers

Mazzucchelli 1849 is the worldwide leader in the manufacture and distribution of cellulose acetate, a plastic material traditionally used in the production of spectacles and sunglasses. This material is derived from cotton and turned into cellulose acetate, a transparent raw base for adding colour. The colours are applied with organic powders and repeatedly sent through rollers for the desired thickness.

Why Choose Acetate Eyewear?

Durability and Strength

Acetate eyewear stands out for its durability. Unlike conventional plastic frames, acetate is highly resistant to cracking, breaking, and colour fading, ensuring your eyewear lasts longer. The material’s resilience makes it an excellent investment for those who want a reliable, comfortable frame that looks great and stands the test of time.

Comfort and Lightweight Feel

Exceptionally lightweight, offering unparalleled comfort for all-day wear. Whether you're at work, at home, or out on an adventure, acetate frames provide a secure fit without the discomfort of heavier materials.

Stylish and Customizable

Acetate eyewear is available in a wide variety of colours, patterns, and finishes, allowing you to choose the perfect frames that express your personality. Whether you prefer bold, eye-catching hues or more subtle tones, acetate offers endless possibilities.

Hypoallergenic Properties

Acetate is made from natural materials, making it a great choice for those with sensitive skin. If you’ve experienced discomfort or irritation from other eyewear materials, take a closer look at acetate for your next pair of glasses.

Eco-Friendly Benefits

Acetate is derived from renewable resources, which makes it an eco-friendly option compared to petroleum-based plastics. At MVO, sustainability is important to us, which is one of the reasons why we love to promote acetate in our frame materials.
