ENHANCING EYE HEALTH AND SAFETY FOR WOMEN: KEY STRATEGIES AND RISKS

April 23, 2024

April has been declared as Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month by Prevent Blindness, an organization dedicated to saving sight. Many do not realize that women have a higher risk of eye health problems than men. In this article, we are going to focus on an important topic that often gets overlooked – women's eye health.

Why are women considered at greater risk for vision loss

As women, we tend to juggle multiple responsibilities and put our needs on the back burner. However, taking care of our eyes needs to be considered a top priority.

According to the National Eye Institute, women are more likely than men to experience vision problems such as dry eye syndrome, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration. This is partly due to hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, menopause, and hormonal therapy. Additionally, women are at a higher risk for developing autoimmune diseases that affect the eyes, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Another reason for a higher degree of vision problems in women is that women typically live longer than men; many eye diseases and disorders become more prevalent with age.

To maintain good eye health, here are some tips that every woman should follow:

  1. Schedule regular eye exams with an eye care professional. Early detection of eye conditions can prevent further deterioration of your vision.
  2. Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays by wearing sunglasses outdoors. Look for sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection.
  3. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, especially those high in antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are beneficial for eye health.
  4. Maintain a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and avoiding smoking.
  5. Practice good eye hygiene by washing your hands before touching your eyes, removing makeup before bedtime, and taking breaks from digital screens to prevent eye strain.

Remember, taking care of your eyes is essential for maintaining your overall health and quality of life. By following these simple tips, you can protect your vision and enjoy clear eyesight for years to come.
