SMART CONTACT LENSES PROJECT IMAGES RIGHT INTO YOUR EYES

April 26, 2021

Some day soon we will be able to get our daily news, read our emails or text messages and even watch a video without looking at a computer screen. How? By using a contact lens that beams information directly into your eyes.

The Mojo Smart Contact Lens projects 70,000 pixels into an area the size of a grain of sand – that’s all that is needed to create a useable image on your retina (thin film at the back of your eyes that receives light). It’s powered by a small computer that you wear somewhere else on your body, that streams visual content in real time to your retinas. This allows information to arrive without the distraction of gazing at a screen…think of a sort of personal heads-up display like those in fighter jet cockpits and even certain automobiles.

There are two other important applications that will be implemented with this new technology:

· Augmented reality to help people with low vision see better – highlighting curbs and doorways for example, for better contrast to improve confidence while walking

· Data gathering of medical statistics – making use of the massive amount of information that the eye can provide, to give you real-time input on things like your energy levels, blood sugars, and eye pressures

Getting the information we want and need, without having the nuisance and distraction of the computerized screens acting as barriers between us and our surroundings, is part of the excitement of Smart Contact Lenses. Prototypes are being tested with early versions being available as early as this summer.
