Your First Contact Lens Appointment

November 8, 2021

Fitting a pair of contact lenses is a lot like finding the right pair of shoes you need to have the right fit and style. Much like how you need to measure your shoe size, your eye care provider will need to measure the different parts of your eye before determining the right lens fit. They’ll measure the curvature of the eye’s surface, the size of your pupil and iris, and also check your eye’s moisture level. They might even dilate your pupil during the exam to examine the inside of your eye. Just as you match your shoes to your personality and style, your doctor will make sure that your contact lenses match your lifestyle and activities. Do you spend hours in front of a computer? Do you have seasonal allergies? Do you like to play sports? The best contact lenses depend on a person’s everyday activities, so it’s important to discuss your lifestyle and hobbies with your doctor to find the right contacts for you. During your first contact lens consultation, plan to spend some additional time at the doctor’s office. Be ready to learn how to properly insert and remove your contact lenses, as well as the best tips for cleaning and storing them. You should look into getting a pair of glasses during your appointment as well. You’ll need them as a backup, whenever you give your eyes a break from wearing contacts. Bring your health and vision insurance cards, and avoid wearing eye makeup to your visit. As with shoes, you may need to try on a few pairs before you find the perfect fit. You will probably need a follow up appointment, so that we can be sure we’ve found the type of lens and prescription that is right for you!
